| The company Holzindustrie Ladenburger needed to replace its 18 years old sawmill in Kerkingen by a mill being flexible enough to process a wide range of products and to guarantee the maximum possible recovery. Ladenburger decided for a LINCK profiling line representing a high availability. Particular features of the line are: active curve sawing, automatic log rotation as well as cant- and sideboard optimisation. |

We offer the full range of products for the lumber market: from the 14 m construction timber via glue-laminated boards, solid structural wood, Duo/Trio beams up to timber mouldings from spruce and larch. Flexible production was therefore standing on top of our list of requests to meet such a wide range of products“.
Self-sufficience Most of the production of the new mill is designed for inhouse further processing. Being one of the biggest solid structural wood producers in Germany, the raw material for this kind of product is one of the most important assortments. “The cutting programmes in our sawmill are based on the requirements of our further processing”, explains plant manager Johannes Kroiß. Batch sizes of 300 to 1000 m³ round logs will now be processed in Kerkingen. As the forest owners offer logs from 10 to 45 cm diameter it had to be possible to process these sizes on the new sawline as well. Logs under bark are purchased in lengths from 3 to 20 m. “The Microtec 3D-scanner at the building entrance determines the true log shape”. These data allow the Linck software to calculate curve and alignment.
Active curve sawing A VM50 chipper canter produces the cant with a stepped cutterhead with six knives. The second chipper canter infeed following the cant turner is equipped with a cant optimisation. “The cant is not only split taper centred but also aligned off-centre, diagonally or active curve sawn depending on its shape”. The data for log alignment are taken over from the 3D-log scanner.
3D-scanner in line The waney-edged, four-sided cant leaving the secondary canter is turned horns-up by the cant turner for possible curve resawing. The second 3D-scanner determines the value optimised dimensions for the sideboards on all four sides. The set sideboard thickness allows to adapt width and position. The computer solution is realised by two profiler units and one circular saw unit. Profiling in Kerkingen means processing of cants with eight heads (one horizontal and one vertical head per corner) resulting in a surface free of tear-outs. The up to four sideboards are separated and the four-sided cant is again turned by 90° prior to final processing. At the same time sideboards are separated and centre products split: up to 5 variable products are possible.
Quarter timber sawing The extended solid structural wood production requires the installation of a horizontal split saw for producing quarter timbers. Its vertical saw arbors can take one or more sawblades. And: an additional height adjustable saw head equipped with one sawblade is mounted on each saw arbour. The maximum quarter timber sizes are 160 x 160 mm. The first board was produced in July. “Exactly one year after the ground-breaking ceremony” Ladenburger reports about the fast start. He found a suitable substitute for the 18 year old sawmill in Aufhausen which was designed for 200.000 m³ round logs/year, however processed more than 450.000 m³ logs/year. The quantity to be processed in Kerkingen in 2009 depends on the market. We will fully adapt to it. The sawmill is presently operating in two shifts. GE ‹
