The commissioning of the most modern Russian sawmill started after a construction time of 12 months only. The official opening ceremony already took place in August 2004 after having completed the work outside the sawmill building.
The new blue-coloured sawmill in Archangelsk is an unusual appearance in the rather outdated Russian sawmill industry. The company belonging to the TITAN-group had a complete production line built up on a spacious site which already housed a sawmill combine 30 years ago. The sawlog sorting system as well as the system for removal of by-products were supplied by the Estonian company Hekotek. The reputated German machine manufacturer LINCK Holzverarbeitungstechnik supplied the heart of the sawmill, a modern, high-capacity profiling line.

General director M. Papylev directed his special attention to quality and reliability, not only during planning, supply and assembly. Parallel to the manufacturing of the machines, buildings and foundations were put up under the supervision of the local project manager V. Minaev according to drawings provided by LINCK. After arrival of the machines on site, cooperation between the suppliers’ assembly personnel and the local personnel specially hired for the new sawmill started.
Participating in the assembly of the sawline allowed the future operating- and service personnel to get familiar with the new equipment. Due to the personnel’s good knowledge and training, it was possible to reach the capacity of the old mill (approx. 300.000 m³ round logs) after 12 weeks operation only. The old sawmill working with three gangsaw lines and one chipper canter line up to that point was then shut-down. “First of all the new sawmill replaces the old gangsaw lines. What is important for us is the product quality to meet the requirements of the international lumber market and the higher recovery as the raw material becomes more and more expensive”, general director Papylev states. “At the same time the recovery of high-quality chips increased by 12 %. Of course several jobs became obsolete, on the other hand new qualified jobs were created. We have to face developments and progress to remain competitve in the future.”
