Forest owners can supply every diameter

To process every log diameter and to offer a wide range of finished products, Klenk Holz France, Volgelsheim/France invested in a Linck profiling line in addition to the already existing bandsaw line. The envisaged processing capacity is presently 800.000 m³ round logs/year.

The new Linck sawline in Volgelsheim was taken into operation in November 2007. “We decided in favour of Linck, as the company is simply the leading one in this branch”, describes Klenk Holz France plant manager Christoph Feldmeyer. He is satisfied to be able to quickly process a large diameter range.
Log diameters from 13 to 90 cm The chipper canter line is designed for processing logs from 13 up to 50 cm small end diameter. It is even possible to process up to 90 cm log diameter with the existing Corley Bandsaw line. “So we are well arranged and can purchase all log assortments from the forest”, explains Klenk overall plant manager Heinz Dreher.
Third shift envisaged The profiling line operates at a feed speed of up to 140 m/min. Processing 800.000 m³ round logs/year is planned in two shifts. “A third shift could allow the processing of 1.2 Million m³ round logs/year”, describes Dreher. 3,00-5,00 m log lengths shall be processed. The Linck-Line is fed by two Kalmar log stackers. Both chipper canters installed, pre- and recut machine, are of model VM 50. The infeed system of the recut chipper canters is equipped with additional servo axes allowing to align the two-sided cant off-centre or diagonally to guarantee the highest possible recovery. The following profiling machine group consists of two profilers units VPF and VPK. Sideboards are cut-off by a circular saw unit CSMK 375-A1/B1. |

The second profiling machine group again consists of two profilers VPF and VPK which allows the production of a total of eight sideboards. The second circular saw CSMK 285-A3/B3 for cutting off the sideboards and separating the centre products was taken from the existing bandsaw line and integrated in the new profiling line. “Our challenge was to achieve an optimum integration of the new equipment into the existing plant”, explains Linck sales assistant Norbert Ott.
High-performance sorting plant Two Springer plants handle lumber sorting. Centre products pass the already existing sorting plant of the bandsaw line with a capacity of up to 160 cycles per minute and a number of 25 sorting trays. The new 28 tray sorter handles the sideboards with 180 cycles per minute.
Combined log yard Springer even built a new log yard. “The special about our new log yard is its design for handling short logs and stem length”, explains Dreher. “Looking for a high-performance log yard we again relied on Springer and worked out a common concept”, adds Feldmeyer. A number of 15 short logs per minute can be sorted. Ten to eleven cuts per minute are possible with stems. Microtec, Brixen/Italy supplied the log scanner. The German and French admission for scanning is available. This new log yard is complementary to the log yard 1 which was particularly built for large diameter logs. Logs are mainly purchased in the Black Forest, the Vosges mountains and the Swiss Jura. Disposing of an own forest service company, Klenk assumes that the log provision is assured. The company TTW Waldpflege is partof the Klenk group since 2001 and is, by its own account, the largest German forest service company and leading in the use of high-technology wood harvesters.
Excellent travel connections “France is the largest market for us”, reports Feldmeyer. Another important market for the sawmill in Volgelsheim to keep transport costs as low as possible are the countries in the South. The range of products includes fresh and dried structural timber, rough and planed, solid structural timber, planed wood, laths as well as packing lumber according to IPPC-standards and garden wood. Due to the good travel connections, the raw material can be supplied by ship, railroad or the nearby motorway access.
Investment info further processing facilities At the same time Klenk Holz France extended its drying capacity to 350.000 m³ lumber/year by installing a Cathild large dimensioned dryer in addition to the already existing twelve drying kilns. The required heat is being supplied by the Urbas heating plant. A planer mill with a capacity of 200.000 m³/year and a solid structural timber production with a capacity of 50.000 m³/year completes the whole plant. Klenk looks positively ahead. “We are an all-round company”, Feldmeyer and Dreher are pleased. “We are therefore independent from individual segments and can quickly respond to changing markets”, the Klenk philosophy is explained.
